Valley Interfaith Child Care Center, Inc. (VICCC) provides quality care and education to very young children from low-income working families. The center requires more than $400,000 annually to operate at full capacity – 50 children. VICCC must raise between $200 and $300 per month per child in private donations.
Quality child care is as expensive (about $1,200 a month for an infant) as it is essential; the grants, reimbursements and parent co-payments are not sufficient to meet operating cost. The greatest cost and investment is payroll, yet the total cost is still less than $5 an hour per child.
At this time, VICCC is about to serve fewer than 10% of the children who need its services. Expanding affordable, quality child care (for ages 0-5) to other sites in the New River Valley will enable more parents to return to the workforce with confidence in the care their children will receive at a VICCC center.
